the winners in the otln*r two races. On St. Ilario
be was beaten out n head after beading all the way,
while on Sylvia G.. in the first race, he finished sec-

of this ])<»i>nlar rider and those who had confidence
enough to hack his inounts, n‘aped a rich reward.

the races and the public sliowed that it had a g<Kxl

Anna Day, Ilawkama. Financier and Dainty Belle
w< re the winning favorites.
Tlie track had drinl out some, hut the going was
still slow and sticky in s|;K>ts. Horses with an
inside pftsition at the post had a decided advantage.
In previous si^asons the outside position at the post
was eagerly sought for. This year sui>erintendent
Myer has succe<*ded in remodeling the course so
that the inside is now the choice iM»sition. The
result is a big improvement in the racing, a ma-
jority of the contests being truer run affairs than
under the old order of things.
The defeat of Lajeuncsse was the greatest dls-
nitjHdntment of the afternoon. The Burlew &
cr Neill filly was a 1 to 2 favorite in the 'fourth
nice, but was outrun all the way and could not do
iM'tter than finish in third position. The finish re-
sulted in a keen stretch drive between Miss Maz-
zoni and St. Ilario, in which the former won by
a head.
Herman B. Dur.vea, one of the prominent eastern
owners, ac'companied hy Francis B. Hitchcock, one
of the stewards of the Jockey Club and president of
the Saratoga Association, were visitors at the Fair
tJrounds this afternoon. It was Mr. Hitchcock’s
first visit to New Orleans in twenty-five years. He
noted the many improvements made and commented
favorably on them. “Racing looks to be well man-
aged here,” said Mr. Hitchcock. “I notice many
faces which are familiar to me around the metro-
}>olitun tracks, and I am sorry that my visit here
will be so short. I came south with Mr. Duryea
and we will leave for his plantation in Hickory Val-
ley. Tennessee Saturday night. We did intend to
remain over Sunday, hut found that we could not
make good connections. Mr. Durxoa is racing sev-
eral horses here in charge of Archie Zimmer and we
came down to look them over.”
The weights for Saturday’s Preliminary Derby
Handicap are out. Burlew & O’Neill’s Chapiiltepec
is toi> weight at 12« pounds: IMnkola and Keei»
.Moving are rated next in order at 121 pounds:
Fizer’s E. T. Shipp gets in at 114 pounds; Ange-
Jus gets in at 103, and the Wi‘rnb<*rg filly, Fri-
:«‘tte. 110. Corrigan’s Lorimer is among the 100-
|4)iind division. Tom Hayes’ goo^l colt, Hollgw, gets
in light at 102; Mas<iuerade is given 11(5 pounds;
Bellwether, Miss Sain, Earl’s Court and Wootllane,
114 pounds each; Marbles gets 110 iKuinds.
Henry Brulatour received word from his partner,
A1 Hamel, who is wintering their filly, Notasulga.
at Sheepshead Bay, that the mare was growing
so fast that he was forced to begin training and
jogging her. Hamel repwts that next spring he
expects Notasulga to be the largest horse in train-
ing. If she continues growing as she has since
being thrown out of training he expects her to
weigh 1,200 pounds and to measure close to seveu-
leen hands.
General Manager Winn wired Harvey T. Woodruff,
secretary of the Western Jockey Club In Chicago,
asking that any Information he might have concern-
ing the men behind the Madri affair he sent to him
nt once. ITie officials here are still investigating
the case and expect new developments within the
next few days.
Mrs. J. S. Bratton has arrived from St. Louis

fifth Ja<*e last Tuenlay.
Jockey Ph'kens was fined $o0 by the judgt^s

curred the judges’ dis*'>Jcasure for some rough work

London, December 7. — The annual sales of thor-
oiighlireds closed at Newmarket yesterday. Prices
were no more than fair. The only dis4iuieting fea-
ture of the sales is the extraordinary determination

Angeles, Cal., Decemlier 19. — An overcast sky
and threatening rain were instrumental today In
keeping many Los Angeles racing enthii.slasts from
visiting Santa Anita Park, hut despite these draw-
backs tlie attendance was large.
A harrow(‘d and sprinkled track made the course
a little slow, but even at that comparatively good
time was made. The fields were small but the
ipiality of the hor.ses entered was much better than
tliose that raced yesterday.
The colors of R. F. Carman failed to finish In
front today, Waterbury lieing the greatest disap-
pointment. He was held at almost prohibitive
odds hut ran a surprisingly dull race for him
and finisluMl an indifferent third.

The three English stallions recently secured by
the French Government, Prince William, Ramrod
and Veronese, are all to stand next season at the
Pin Stud.
The French have secured another stallion In Gin-
gal. a bay four-year-old horse by Carbine, out of
Pindi (dam of the speedy Bass Bock), and he will
stand next year at the De La Chapelle Stud, owmsl
by the Countess de Chenelette.
New Orleans, La., December 19. — Texas horse-
men who have always found New Orleans a profit-
able stamping ground, are here in force this season,
and even at this early date they have been doing
things. So far the honors belong to Sam Louis,
who only has four or five of his own. Louis started
his Approbation early in the City Park meeting
and won at 10 to 1, beating Flavigny and others
in a drive. Two days later he tackled about the
same lot again with the colt, including Flavigny.
.Many of the speculators thought the former race
a fluke and so a profitable price was offered. A
third time did .Approbation beat Flavigny and
other fair ones at City Park, but this time he was
favorite. This is a well put up, sturdy, game look-
ing colt and very likely one of the very best sel-
ling platers here. Besides Approbation’s three
victories in a row, at the Fair Grounds Louis
beat a good lot with bis Miss Ferris at 25 to 1,
winning some fair wagers on the race. An excel-
lent beginning this, but hidden away somewhere
in the Texas collection is a colt which it is said
can give Approbation ten pounds and a beating.
J. J. Ogles and O. G. Parke have not yet got
busy. When they do they will add mere prestige
to the colony of turfmen from the Lone Star
State.
Of the Texas horses that have shown to date,
Phil King’s two-year-old bay colt, Ray Thompson,
by Sorcerer— Succasunna, is in a class by himself.
This stout built colt has Derby material in him.
He came here with a brilliant record behind him
at the Texas meetings. In his first start he was
beaten by so good a mud runner as Platoon, con-
cwling one pound and scale weight to the latter,
while his next essay, in the Crescent City Stakes,
in ivhich he carried 124 pounds to A1 Muller’s 112
ill heavy going and was easily beaten by ‘the
latter, was a performance of more than ordinary
merit.
Oakland, Cal., Deoemlier 19. — Racing at Oakland
today was conducted under most disagreeable weather
and track conditions. Rain fell heavily throughout
the fori'iioon. The attendant high wind caused the
moisture to penetrate every portion of the grand-
stand, rendering it almost untenable. Nevertlieless
lietwoen 3,000 and 4.<m race-going people endured
the discomforts for the sake of the sport.
‘Walter Miller’s star was again in the ascendant,
which, combined with the success of four favorites,
made the occasion a very profitable one to the specu-
latively inclined. The chainpiun jockey In^gan
auspiciously for his legion of hackers by captniiiig
the first race with Huerfano in easy fashion. The
odds against the colt were um*xi>ectedly liberal.
The president of the New California Jockey Club
scored another success iii the closing race with his
splendid three-year-old Projnicio, which had not
b«‘en out since his recent record breaking feat at
six furlongs* Owing to the uncertainty which pre-
vailed as to the. ability of the big Galveston colt
to run in the muddy going, the price 'against him
receded steadily from 4 to 5 to as good as 3 to 2.
Support was forthcoming at the latter figure and
Prejnicio simply cantered the journey in fast time
for the track. Exiierts declare that the winner is
a genuine crackerjaek.
Billy PnllpMin, winner of the seeuud race was
bid up from $400 to $1,200 by E. Trotter and ac-
quired at the last-named figure.
Dugan & Boland, owners of Billy Pullman, retal-
iated by claiming High Gun for $725. W. Hawke
boosted Prince Bnitiis from $700 to $1,000. His
owner bought him In for the customary $5 advance.
\V . S. Hawkins claimed Senator Warner out of
the fifth race for $1,025.
Starter Dwyer set jockey Scovllle down for two
days for misbehavior at the post.
The sixteen yearlings bred at W. O’B. Macdon-
ongh s Ormondale Stud at Menlo Park, which were
sold at auction yesterday, brought a total of $7,035,
or an average of $440 per head. The star of the
sale, a bay colt by Ossary— Lovelight. brought
$1,400.
C. T. Honshall will ship his string to Arcadia
to race.
Richard Dwyer collected the sum of $361 at the
track yesterday which was forwarded to the widow
of Morris McKnight, who died recently in Kansas
City. Thomas H. Williams contributed $100 of this
amount.
Riley Grannan is a recent arrival.
PRESENT ENGLISH BETTING LAWS.
VIRGINIA REPORTS ENCOURAGING. EARNINGS OF THE M'GINNIS STABLE.
Washington, D. C., December 19. — The movement
to rehabiliate racing in the Old Dominion State,
first received its impetus during the fall meeting
of the Washington Jockey Club, by the breeders
and horsemen gathered there organizing themselves
for the purpose of systematically conducting a can-
vass and likewise a campaign of the state to as-
certain the sentiment of the people of the com-
monwealth. The new organization is ranch grati-
fied to learn that there is a strong sentiment in
favor of racing as shown by the records of tlie
several county fair associations, which report that
attendance has been double where racing with bet-
ting thereon was had In conjunction with the agri-
ciiltnrul exhibits. Horsemen here with stables
wintering at the Benning track, are watching the
progress of the movement for racing across the
Potomac. They would welcome a change from
Benning to a new track situated near Alexandria
for early spring racing ami for wintering purposes,
as they are convinced that the soil on the local
track has a debiltating effect on horses running
on it aud has been resiionsible for many horses not
attaining their best racing form until late in the
season.
One really gV¥>d race horse is a great thing in
any stable. Without Frank Gill that of J. L.
McGipnis would have cut no great figure, but
through his speed and gameness McGinnis has
achieved a prominent position in the turf world.
The colt is a fine *representative of the St. Simon
horse, Collar, the progeny of which have also done
well in England this year. As the winner of the
Withers Stakes, Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes
and Equality Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, and the
Travers Stakes at Saratoga, he ranks with the best
three-year-olds of 1907, and nothing but the fact
that he is not entirely sound appears to stand in the
way of bis doing exceedingly well in 1908. Aside
from him Welbonme was the best money gainer of
the stable. Its record for the year is as follows:
Horse. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won.
And«ix, in Horse and Hounds, has this to say of
present betting laws in England:
“There appears little donht that the last Betting
Act, now in force fcM* a good many months, al-
though it has driven bookies from the streets, has
led to the workingmen betting on the ‘nod,’ and
is doing much harm. Years ago I said in this
paper tliat the only real thing to control gambling
is to legalize it, as then It could be really held
In check, for few men would he so reckless as to
bet what they were incapable of paying, if hy
doing so fines and perhaps Imprisonment were the
alternatives of not settling. Certainly, whatever
it did to the poorer classes, the gamblers that start
life well off would be saved times without number
from ruin if the losses they Incurred were made
recoverable by law. However, such a common sense
act as this will never, it is to be feared, be
brought about in faddist-ridden England, although
everybody with a thinking mind knows that, as
the gambling Instinct can never be stopped, the
bi>8t thing Is to control as much as possible, ami
this recognition would do more for than anything.”

BOOKMAKER BAIRD BADLY HURT.
Oakland, Cal., December 19. — Charles Baird, the
iMMtk maker W’ho was assaulted and cruelly dealt
with while on his way home from the truck a week
«go, will not l>e able to resume business at the
tra«*k for several weeks yet. His jaw was frac-
tured in two places, which necessitates it being
lda<*ed in a plaster cast aud It will not be removed
for some time, says the physician attending Baird.
Oakland, Cal., Docemlier 19. — Veterinary surgeon
.Tohu Hickey , who was sent to Brentwooil Stock
Farm, to treat the sire, Rubicon, has returned and
reports the hor.se to bo now safely on the road to
recovery. Rubicon is a sixteen-year-old chestnut
horse hy Rayon d’Or— Lilly R., by Glenelg, and Is
owned by Edward Lanlgan. a San Francisco i>oli-
ticiaii of note. The best of t’ne twenty horses Rubi-
con has sent to the races since his retirement to

PROFITABLE TO CRESCENT CITY.
New Orleans, La., December 19. — A most remark-
able fact and one that can be attested- by local
people, is that the patronage of the two big tracks
in operation here is now mainly made up of out-of-
town race lovers. If the race association had to
uepeiid on the local iieople for support, they would
find it hard to make both ends meet. There is no
doubt that instead of being a drain on the com-
munity it augments ite revenoe heavily.
New York. December 19.— The new Sheepshead
Bay course will be a beauty, and something on the
order of Morris Park. Improvements are mainly
on the bottom turn, the old track, which was one
mile and a furlong, remaining as it was.
The new part will have a turn close to the
yearling track turn and the racing will be part
of the way on the Futurity stretch. The track it-
self Is mainly completed, with the fence poets up.
A few stables are to be removed yet, as they ob-
struct the view from the grandstand. The stretch
on the new track will be easily three furlongs.
No matter how bad the weather gets now. It can-
not interfere with the work, as the grading is now
going on. The moving of stables will take up the
rest of the winter, as they will all be re-arranged
to face one way.
IT WAS NOT MILLER’S MOUNT.
Backers of Walter Miller’s mounts, .and they are
legion, had a mental good time Wednesday under
the belief that he was hstride Royal Maxim when
the latter won at Oakland at 30 to 1. Unluckily
for them, it was E. Davis and not MUler who rode
the long shot.
